As the growing season comes to an end, round bales can be seen scattered around a farmers field, waiting to be collected and stored for the winter. These are the days where you begin to notice that daylight hours are getting shorter, kids are heading back to school and you try cram as much outside activities into your day, knowing that cold weather will be here before you know it. Once these bails are gathered and stacked into giant piles, they become a farm kids favorite playground.

About the quilt block

The Farmers Field quilt block was originally published as a pattern in the Kansas City Star on April 5, 1939. In the 1980’s, Harold & Dorothymae Groves compiled and edited a series of volumes that included exact duplicates of motifs and patterns that were printed in the newspaper, compiling over 1000 patterns. Groves Publishing Co., Kansas City, Missouri, did not claim accuracy as to the pattern lines, many of the designs were just drawings, never tested or sewn into an actual block.
