This piece is a reminder of the joy of seeing the sun shine again after several bitterly cold days, at the end of an unrelenting winter. The photo of my side yard, captured from my patio, is of a calm winter’s evening, with the sun peaking between the clouds, as though it’s promising to return.

About the quilt block

The quilting design used in the blue sky is based on a quilt block, called Depression. It was published in the Kansas City Star in 1937, at a time quilt patterns were submitted by readers and staff members. Many women had turned to quilting, not only because it was a fashionable and inexpensive hobby, but they had access to much more fabric. While it may or may not have been named for the era of the times, it is proof that we can make beautiful things from very little.
